Indeed you can very easily shorten the stem of your fan. 

On the other hand, always leave at least 30 cm between the blades and your ceiling, so that the fan remains efficient. 

Shortening your fan is very simple, you just have to cut the shaft with a hacksaw, and make a hole for the bolt that holds the motor. 

Think that you will have an excess of cables, and therefore you will have to take care of the storage of these cables in the canopy.
